I have active almost five year old who can play from 7am to 7pm every day. He loves to play with me but is starting to be able to play with himself. The ability to play independently is amazing and finally lets me get somethings done around the house. A few indoor toys have stood out this year as ones that have helped him learn to play independently, foster creativity and that he continually goes back to playing with. What my kids like…
Before I go into detail about these toys, here is a little about my active son. My son is 4 (almost 5) and is very active. He loves super heroes, animals, music, super heroes, cars, play fighting- and have I mentioned super heroes?
My son likes everything, he is willing to give anything a try, but is quick to dismiss things that he doesn’t like. He is very opinated and verbal about his opinions. Until very recently he could not play independently, he liked to have someone playing with him at all time.
Around his fourth birthday he really began to play independently and I feel I owe some of that to a few toys which have kept his interest and foster his creativity. Now my son has a ton of super hero toys and stuffed animals which he loves to play with, and I love (and so does my entire family) buying him the specific super hero that he loves in that moment.
But I really love the below list of toys that are not super hero dependent (which changes daily, from Marvel to Power Ranger to Buzz, his favorite is always different). I suspect that toys will be played with for years and will be handed down to my daughter.
Best Indoor Toys for Active Boys
1. Magna tiles. Magna tiles are plastic tiles with magnets on the edges. They are very simple to use to build well anything. My son builds houses, houses for his super heroes, cars, and boats with these magna tiles. Unlike other building toys that must be connected in a certain way to work- Magna tiles all just click together by the magnets.
There is a reason there is over 11,000 reviews on Amazon for Magna Tiles. These are my go to gift for any birthday party.
Magna tiles click together easily (due to the magnet) so cleaning up these tiles is easier than blocks. If you have little ones, you get it. I clean up the magna tiles at least 2 times a day from the floor of my family room.
My son has been building garages for his cars, as you can see below. The play possibilities now are endless, which I love about this toy.

2. Duplo Car Town Race Cars. Duplo sets are Legos for the little ones, specifically ages 2 and old. This set in particular is a huge hit at my house with my four year old and even my 2 year old daughter. My son uses the blocks in this set to make cars (as the set was intended) and everything else he can imagine- from a hide-out for his action figures to a boat. This set has tons of different size blocks and the car bases.

3. Clay Set. Clay is a staple in my house. Sets with different tools help spark creativity in my kids- but one set stands out- a dinosaur play kit. This set has been played with for hours and hours in my house. There are so many pieces to play with in different ways. As my son gets older, he is able to find new ways to play with. He now can use the dinosaur stamper and make a dinosaur shape. Check out the set here.
4. Puppets. This was an unexpected win for my son. He received as a gift four hand puppets. I did not think he would use honestly. However, once I showed him how to put the puppets on his hands, his imagination has soared. These puppets have been everything from pirates to superheroes to his friends from school. I did not think the puppets would keep his attention- but they have become a core toy in our house. Check out the puppets hereL Puppets: Amazon Link
5. Toy Kitchen. I am going to miss this kitchen when my kids outgrow (which I don’t think will be for a long time). Every single morning we play in the toy kitchen. My kids like to make me my morning coffee, while I drink my actual morning coffee. They like to serve me food they make and fight over who cooks first. I realized cooking and meal prep is a big activity in my house, so it makes sense that they mimic this. Watching my son model my cooking behavior makes me laugh- I realize now I must spill a lot because he is always pretending to spill food when he cooks!
I could not find the exact toy kitchen we have, but this one is very similar: Amazon Link.

I realize as I write out this list that these toys are also great for girls! I think this list shows that some of the best toys for active kids are toys that spark their imaginations. My son loves his super hero toys and action figures- but these toys he never seems to get tired of- and is always using in new and different ways.
