I love party planning for my kids parties but one thing I struggle with is goodie bags. I hate most goodie bags my kids get: I hate that my kids will eat whatever is in the bag instantly, that half the items in the bags are destroyed in two minutes or are just not appropriate for little kids. I try to put together a quality goodie bag at a cost effective price. Keep reading to find out about the affordable superhero goodie bags I put together for my son’s fifth birthday party.

For prior parties, I have purchased coloring books as goodie bags and last year I did a construction party goodie bag with a small toy and magic sand. Which you can read about here. For my son’s fifth birthday party, the theme was superheros. I quick look on Amazon will show an endless list of superhero the,ed small items, which while tempting, I knew would end up in the trash.
Why I hate most goodie bags
My kids love getting goodie bags and it’s so nice that parents spend the time and money to put them together. However, I want to highlight bad goodie bag items for small kids for a minute.
Too much junk food: my kids eat immediately after the party, like as soon as we walk out the door of the party-, even though they just ate cake and pizza.
Items that are not age appropriate, like small items: my kids have received small bouncy balls or tiny erasers. My kids are two and five, so these items are choking hazards.
Plastic toy designed to stick to walls: I don’t need to explain. (But seriously, why would you do that to another parent).
Slime: Please don’t give my kids something that is only going to cause damage to my house.
I think my list makes complete sense, but still parents put these items into goodie bags. Just imagine, you come home from a party with a kids on a sugar high. Your child opens the goodie bag full of sugary treats and slime. The candy and slime is instantly open before you can even take off your shoes. Now there is slime on your floor and walls, and your kid is eating a pixie stick. This nightmare scenario has happened to me many times. I want to avoid this scenario with any goodie bags that I hand out.
Superhero goodie bags
I want to give a quality goodie bag out, but I also do not want to spend a fortune. Here is my affordable goodie bag.

Breakdown of items:
Bags. I used plastic bags from a local dollar store. $1.25 for 20 everything else came from Amazon. I found comparable bags on Amazon, which can be found here. I considered paper bags, but the price was just too high. I like how the look of the goodie bags came out using the clear bags, as the kids can see what is inside without tearing the bag apart and making a mess.
Fruit Flavored Snacks. Yes, I said I want to avoid sugar, but these gummy treats meet the theme and are a very, very small package. Check out the link here. How could I resist these snacks:
Ring pops. Ring pops are a fan favorite for the five year old crowd. I was specifically told by my son that he had to have a ring pop or a push pop in his goodie bags. It was his birthday, so I had to include. Check out the link to the ring pops I purchased here.
Activity books. This, in my opinion, was the best part of the goodie bag. These activity packs from Amazon have a small coloring book, crayons and stickers. I love these packs to just keep in the diaper bag for when my kids need a distraction. These activity packs are the highest price item in the bag, but the quality is worth the cost and is a really nice item to include in the goodie bag. Check out the link to Amazon here.
Check out how nice these activity packs are:
These activity packs were a huge hit with the kids!
Everything is tied with a ribbon. I like this because the kids can have a small snack in the car if they want after the party and then an activity book to play with when they get home (or save for later).

Other cute items that are affordable and meet the Superhero theme
I am very happy with how the goodie bags came out but I did see some other items I considered:
Superhero mask:
Stickers:
Key chains (better for older kids. Although my son got one when he was four and is obsessed with it on his backpack):
Superhero Drawstring Bag:
Conclusion and Tips for Affordable Superhero goodie bags
My tip for quality yet affordable goodie bags is to shop early for goodie bag items. I look for sales and coupons which make a huge difference when you need 20 of an item.
I try to remember to keep things simple with goodie bags. I listen to my son and what he likes in goodie bags when planning his. I hope my goodie bags do not end up in the trash but will be enjoyed by the kids after the party. Each bag came to about $2.15. I think each item is a quality item and I am very happy with how the bags turned out. Most importantly, my son loved the goodie bags he got to hand out at his party!
