In my post Introducing My Garden I wrote about not knowing how to start a garden. The truth was, I did not start gardening when I bought my house because I was afraid to start. This now seems silly to me but you may feel the same way and are still skeptical about starting a garden. If you feel the same way and are afraid to start a garden, you need to keep reading.
I am a perfectionist. I do not like to start anything that I cannot succeed at. I was worried about starting a hobby I knew nothing about. I was worried about starting a hobby that would destroy the grass I had spent so long getting to look healthy and green. I was worried I couldn’t learn enough to have a successful garden and that gardening would be too complicated as a hobby. I thought people would think it was a stupid hobby. Even with all these worries- I just jumped into gardening and I am so glad I did.
Clearly, I think gardening is an amazing hobby.
I have had my share of fails with my garden. But that is part of gardening. You cannot be a perfectionist in the garden. Knowing it won’t be perfect has helped me let go of my perfectionist ideals and helps relax me. You can do everything by the book and some bugs can eat your cauliflower seedling you spent weeks growing (that just happened to me). Your seeds may not germinate or a bird may eat your strawberries.
I love learning about gardening and I am so glad so many people share my love of this hobby. I can go to a local nursery and speak with other garden enthusiasts. I can listen to a podcast about gardening, watch a video to watch on YouTube or follow a new instagram account.
If you are skeptical or afraid to start a garden- just start! Here is my motto, I put it into an image to make it seem official:
