I realized the moment after I hit publish on my post “Introducing My Garden” that I entirely forgot about all of my herbs I am currently growing in my summer 2022 garden. My herbs deserve their own post, so here it is- all about my summer 2022 herbs. Herbs are an excellent choice for a first time gardeners to grow and are a plant you will get a lot of use out of.
When I first started my garden, herbs were one of the first thing I knew I wanted to grow. I thought herbs were probably simple to grow. I had a great first experience growing herbs- but growing herbs is anything but simple and can be as exciting as growing vegetables.
Herbs in my First Garden
The first herb in my garden was basil. I purchased a basil plant from Burpee. I thought basil would be something I could use, as I knew I could add to any pasta dish and make caprese salads, if I was able to grow both the basil and the tomatoes I planned for that first year. (I didn’t make caprese salads that year, as my first slicer tomato plant died.) I also had success translating a plant from my Rise garden and re-planting herbs I purchased from the grocery store into my garden. You can even grow basil from just a stem, which is a fun experiment for a first time gardener.
Herbs in my Summer 2022 Garden
In my third year of gardening, I am currently growing:
- Basil (several varieties)
- Parsley
- Cilantro
- Rosemary
- Green Onions
- Mint
- Chocolate Mint
- Hot & Spicy Oregano
Most of my herbs are in my raised planter bed this year.

There are so many varieties of each herb. Herbs can be added to almost everything you cook and make your cooking instantly better. You can even make your own tea, which I have done with the Chocolate Mint.
The stand out herb of the season to me is the Hot & Spicy Oregano. I purchased this variety of oregano from a local nursery based on the amazing smell of this herb. This herb has an amazing pepper smell with a hint of heat, which also describes how it tastes. I have used it in numerous dishes and it adds a ton of flavor. Without a doubt, this is is an herb I want in my garden next year.

When starting a garden, people first focus on the flowers or tomatoes, but don’t forget the herbs when planting your garden. If you are a first time gardener, definitely consider growing herbs.
